  • Festival day

    • Annually eagle masters living in the area officially gather on the procession of Eagle Festival right prior to the Hunting Season. All falconers who arrive at the Festival come to demonstrate their skill of training the bird of prey and power and bravery of their eagles. Oftentimes prey of those eagles are steppe foxes, rabbits and other small cats and wolves. Skill contests are held all day long together with other traditional games such as coin picking up or kokpar (literally meaning goat pulling). Over the course of the game, horse mounted young Kazakh men will attempt to place a goat or sheep carcass. Whoever catches the goat first shall bring it behind the predefined line whilst other competitors will try their best to snatch it from him. During the festival, some local crafts women will also present their art works such as bags, pillow cases, wall hangings, traditional fox fur hats and so on.
    • Overnight optional: tourist ger camp / nomadic family ger (B+L+D)

  • Hunting with a falconer and its golden eagle

    • Ulgii - Sagsai
    • Second day of the Eagle Festival will continue with other games to show skills of true hunter eagles. Masters will place their eagles above on the hill and will call them either their arms or a fur of an animal within predefined circle for better score by standing down the hill. Later winner falconers will be awarded prizes of honor.
    • Following the end of the Festival, we will join a falconer and arrive at his place in Sagsai village not far from Ulgii city.
    • Overnight with Kazakh herder’s family (B+L+D)

    Also,

We will be joining our host falconer and his friends for a hunting journey for the next three days with their eagles. Daily we will depart from our place to stay on a horseback to the neighboring mountains together with eagle masters. Once on the mountain top, falconer removes the hood of its eagle, so eagle could examine the horizon with its sharp eyes. When an eagle, spots the prey it will let its master to know by either attempting to take off or giving out a small cry, then master releases the bird. For this traditional hunting technique says patience is the key, because bird may not catch a prey each time when she takes off. But just an idea of men being able to tame and unites together with this proud animal of sky over the centuries make hunting with Eagle practice simply unique culture to explore.
