About Mongolia

Mongolia is located in Central Asia, landlocked between Russia and China. You can see stunning landscapes and rare plants, animals and birds which cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. It is impossible to count all the stars in the clear blue sky, untouched by light or industrial pollution. In addition to being a tourist’s dream, Mongolia is the world’s second most important country for the discovery of numerous dinosaur species. We invite you to visit the homeland of the Genghis Khan; Who UNESCO has titled “Man of the millennium”.

Western Mongolia

Some two-thirds of Mongolia is covered by mountains. The main ranges are the Altai and the Khangai mountains which run from northwest to south, across the northern central part of the country. These forest and mountain zones are relatively well watered and surrounded by mountain-meadow and flat grassland. From the western mountain chains open steppe stretches to the southeast and merges into semi-desert in the south.

Eastern Mongolia

Steppe (grassland) covers much of the country and predominates in central and eastern areas. The Eastern Plain, averaging 1,100m above sea level, extends for several hundred kilometers. It is gently undulating grassland with hills of 50-100m height.

Northern Mongolia

Water is distributed unevenly in Mongolia, predominately in lakes and rivers to the northwest. The low-lying area between the Mongol Altai and Khangai Mountains is often called the “Depression of the Great Lake’s although it is technically not a depression (ie: below sea level). The area is 600km long and up to 250km wide. At its lowest, northernmost point is lake Uvs, Mongolia’s largest saltwater lake(3,350km2).

South Mongolia

Sand and sand dunes occupy about 10% of Mongolia’s territory, but much of the Gobi is a plain of scrub and gravel rather than sand, with scattered salt and soda lakes. Summer flash-floods spread widely across the impermeable surface to create raging torrents which cut channels 1m or more deep as the water drains off to find its level and then soaks away.

Central Mongolia

Tov literally means ‘central’, and although Ulaanbaatar (an autonomous municipality) lies within its boundaries, the aimag capital is the small town of Zuunmod. Owing to its proximity to Ulaanbaatar and the good local transport system to and from the capital, this aimag is an excellent place to start exploring the country through a series of day trips. If you are waiting for a visa extension or planning an expedition further afield, the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, focused on a massive steel equine sculpture mounted by the khan himself, with its museums and surrounding exhibitions, offers you a great day trip and is a conveniently short distance away from the noise and hassle of the capital. The Tov landscape is predominantly forested mountain/ steppe, where wild berries, mushrooms and medicinal herbs grow in abundance. In the central provinces there are over 30 clear-water rivers (good for fishing), among them the Kherlen and Tuul. A number of mineral spas and hot springs are found at Janchivlin, Booroljuut and Elstei. These springs are in the main totally undeveloped so please don’t get your hopes up that you will be submerging in hot pools while looking at mountain goats clashing heads on the mountainsides, as you do in New Zealand. Towns in Tov include the aimag centre Zuunmod, the former coal-mining town of Nalaikh and the peaceful settlements of Gachuurt and Khandgait.
